Welcome to Island Hopping in the Andaman Sea of Thailand
Koh Lanta Island
Koh Lanta Island is located approximately 70 kilometres south of Krabi in the Andaman Sea on the southeast side of Southern Thailand's Phang Nga Bay. Koh Lanta Islands stretch for 27 kilometres in the north-south direction and is traversed by a mountain range that is partly still covered by virgin rain forest. The mountains on Kho Lanta Krabi reach heights of 500 metres in its northern and southern parts. The Andaman Sea Thailand off the west coast of Koh Lanta Island is crystal clear and the beaches of powdery sand.
Koh Lanta Island has a population of approx. 25,000 people. The Koh Lanta Krabi population is a mixture of local Muslims and northern Buddhists, while the local trade, especially in the village of Baan Saladan at the northern tip of Koh Lanta Island is predominantly under the control of Thai Buddhist's from Chinese descent.
Most of the Muslim community on Koh Lanta Thailand earn their living from fishing, prawn farming and rubber plantations. Koh Lanta Islands derive their name from a kind of rack (Lantan), that the people of Southern Thailand used, to grill the catch, that they regularly found in the waters off the Andaman Sea Islands when travelling along the Andaman Sea Coast. Kho Lanta Island is connected to Southern Thailand's electrical grid since 1996 and to the telephone network of Thailand since 2001. Kho Lanta Yai Island can be easily reached by 2 car ferries, which operate from 06:00 to 22:00. Most roads on Koh Lanta Krabi have an all weather surface, only a few roads in the very south are still without surface as can be seen on the Koh Lanta Map Thailand.
Ko Laanta Island accommodation on Koh Lanta Thailand ranges from simple beach-front bungalows to a wide choice of middle-class resorts and hotels, most with swimmingpool, and tops with several properties offering 4- and 5-star accommodation in Koh Lanta hotels. Local laws do not permit buildings, that are higher than the coconut palms, a law protecting Koh Lanta Yai Island from the negative impacts of tourism so far.
Ko Lanta Yai Island can be easily discovered by motorbike, which can be rented at most Koh Lanta resorts and other shops. Make sure that you are familiar with the vehicle and test the front and rear brakes, the lights and horn. Drive with extra care when passing through or by Koh Lanta Island villages and schools and remember, that swimming suits and naked upper body are fine for the beach, but not the right attire for a drive through the local villages of Koh Lanta Thailand. Plan a visit to Lanta Orchid Nursery, Lanta Butterfly Garden, the Old Town or Mu Koh Lanta National Park on the southern tip of Koh Lanta Island.
Those, who want to make Koh Lanta Island their home, or at least want to stay here for extended periods every year, do no longer need to find a Kho Lanta bungalow resort where they could get a good deal on a long-stay contract. Renting a private house or acquiring a land plot on Koh Lanta Krabi to build a home by themselves is no longer necessary, with Koh Lanta property houses and Koh Lanta apartments built in different locations, from Saladan on the northern tip all the way down to the very south of Koh Lanta Island. The increase in real estate offers on the Koh Lanta property market is a direct response to the growing demand from people who want to make Koh Lanta Thailand their home, because the climate on Southern Thailand's Andaman Sea coast is very attractive to “cold-struck” Europeans and Americans. When the weather is at its coldest in Europe and America, Koh Lanta Island is at its most attractive. While in many places, the prime locations are already sold, there is still a huge variety of stunning property and Koh Lanta Real Estate available on Lanta Island.
