Welcome to Island Hopping in the Andaman Sea of Thailand
Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and Koh Lipe Islands
Koh Tarutao National Park is composed of 61 islands, 7 of them covering relatively large areas, namely Koh Tarutao Islands, Koh Adang Islands, Koh Rawi Islands, Koh Lipe Islands, Koh Klang Islands, Koh Dong Islands and Koh Lek Islands. The remaining Andaman Sea islands of Thailand are small islands scattered on the east coast of Koh Tarutao Island and surrounding Koh Adang Islands and Koh Rawi Islands. Therefore, Koh Tarutao National Park can be divided geographically into two main parts: the Koh Tarutao Archipelago, located 30 kilometres away from the coast and the Koh Adang-Koh Rawi Archipelago another 45 kilometres to the West. The southern boundary of the national park is the Thai-Malaysian border with the island of Pulau Langkawi only 5 kilometres away from the southern tip of Koh Tarutao Island.
Koh Adang Island with 30 square kilometres and Koh Rawi Island with 31 square kilometres are the main islands of the western archipelago. Both islands are mainly occupied by mountainous areas and sloping complexes with few coastal plains.
Koh Lipeh Island or Koh Leepae Island, which is only 4 square kilometres large, is the most important island in the Koh Adang-Koh Rawi Archipelago. Koh Lee-peh Island is flat and dominated by lowlands in the middle portion. As water is available all year round, Koh Li-pe Island is home to the largest human settlement of the region. Kho Lee Pae Island's 800 native inhabitants are sea gypsies (Chao Lay), who settled on Koh Rawi Island and Koh Adang Island before the establishment of the Koh Tarutao National Park and have their own tradition, culture, religion, language and dances, that clearly separate them from the Thai. Koh Lipe Island is the only place offering accommodation besides the national park accommodation (that is difficult to book in advance). For reservation of accommodation on Koh Adang Island, please contact the Royal Forestry Department of the National Park Division at Tel ++ 662-5790529, ++ 662-5794842 or ++ 662-5795269.
